Facilitation Skills Practice
Facilitating stigmatized content is a skill on its own, separate from knowing the material. Exercises include:
Hot-seat Q&A drills — practice fielding unexpected or awkward student questions in real time
Role-play scenarios — practicing responses to disclosures, pushback, or a student who shuts down
Fishbowl exercise — one trainee facilitates while others observe and give structured feedback
Values-neutral language practice — reframing judgmental or biased phrasing into inclusive, non-stigmatizing language
Silence & discomfort tolerance — practicing sitting with an awkward pause instead of rushing to fill it
Mandated reporting boundary drill — practicing what to say (and not say) if a disclosure crosses into reportable territory
Mock-teach with feedback — trainee runs a real segment of curriculum in front of peers/exec, gets structured feedback before certifying
